False Friends

This list contains English words that have similar sounding words in German, but which have a different meaning. As these false friends are very similar to a German word, the German word meaning is often transferred to the English word, which can lead to very confusing but also amusing word mix-ups. The following list is thematically broad, but focuses on words that are particularly relevant for academic writing. It is intended to help you when writing English texts. This list is certainly not complete and does not claim to be, but it will be expanded as necessary. If you miss a word, write to me!
